21 Santo Domingo Circle - A Home by Kim Dressel and Dressel Construction in Las Campanas
Arriving:
Approaching the home, you are greeted by a porphyry paved drive that leads to a massive set of stacked moss rock pillars anchoring two, fifteen foot electric gates which are each made of hand worked wood, embellished by wrought iron filigree. The overall effect is that the gates certainly do what gates are intended to do, but perform that function with a rare sense of lightness and grace, yet are fully in keeping with the promise of what this estate will deliver.
Upon being let into the entry courtyard via the keypad/intercom on the security pedestal by the gates, we are impressed with both the style and layout of the exterior courtyard. In the center, is a large, seven-foot tall fountain rock set in a circular base of river rocks.
Emanating from this center is a pattern of porphyry paving cobble stones which is very European Grand Entry in feeling. Porphyry, as you know, are those igneous red rock cobble stones that were used to build the Roman roads the Legions used to march upon.
There is ample parking here for guests, and the courtyard also provides separate entrances for the Guesthouse and for the nanny's passage to the main estate. Especially noteworthy are the custom garage doors that are evocative of those from fine carriage houses.
Surrounding the courtyard are stacked moss rock planters. Everything here is fully landscaped, as is the whole property. It is in this courtyard that we see the first examples of the unique character of the kinds of efforts that have gone into the home, evidenced in this case by the large number of completely hand wrought lighting fixtures, used both to illuminate the pathways and to shed light on the courtyard. We will later find these fixtures throughout the exterior treatment of the home, and fully in keeping thematically with the custom interior fixtures that are exclusively Mr. Dressel's.
The Entry Garden Courtyard:Upon walking into this lushly landscaped courtyard, we are at once welcomed by the sound of running water and overwhelmed by the vistas for which the home is named.
Before us lies a pathway of slate and flagstone leading to the front door of the residence. This path is flanked by a brook on one side and a fish pool on the other. The pathway then passes through a grove of aspens. All the margins of the courtyard are planted.
But, what really captivates us even more is the view through the Entertaining Cabana/Living Portal courtyard to the laddered hills, leading the eye to the equally evenly stepped ridges of the Jemez mountains to the West.
There is a perfect feeling of symmetry, as the levels we gradually descend to reach the front door perfectly echoed the rise of the views from the green of the golf course and its surrounding hills, out to the foothills and peaks of the mountains. It is a very subtle presentation, but completely in keeping with the thought that Kim puts into his homes.
