When Gerry Barber moved to Los Alamos, it was to teach industrial arts at Los Alamos High School and at the middle school. That was back in 1977. Taking a year off from teaching to work on a construction crew proved to Gerry that the construction business was where he wanted to be. In 1980 he started up his own company, making cabinets and furniture, naming it Madera Builders (madera is the spanish word for wood). Twenty-one years later Madera Builders employs six long time employees. All six of their craftsmen have been with them for a minimum of 7 years and a maximum of 21 years, and now share the profits of the company. This makes for a very personalized and quality driven experience for clients.
Madera Builders builds approximately three to four homes per year which allows for a personal touch that bigger companies cannot provide. Gerry Barber oversees each job personally with the help of an on the job foreman/ supervisor. The foreman is on the job at all times and Gerry visits each job on a daily basis. This personal involvement has proven very successful in reducing job costs and client frustration.
Most of Madera Builders' projects are in the Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Taos area, but they have also built as far north as Chama and done several log homes in the Pecos area. They build frame, adobe, pumice, rasta block, and e-crete. We do new residences as well as major remodels and renovations.
